  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Cake Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  • In another bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
  • Add red food coloring and mix until well combined.
  • Stir in the vinegar, then pour the batter into prepared bakeware.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Frosting Preparation

  • Beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until creamy.
  • Add vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
  • Frost the cooled cake with the cream cheese frosting.

Notes

This cake is best served chilled and can be decorated with additional red velvet crumbs or chocolate shavings for a dramatic effect.
